Douglas Johns Trophy
Congratulations to Joshua Thompson.
Scholar Josh Thompson came 2nd at the annual Douglas Johns Trophy held at Harewood Downs Golf Club on Thursday 27th July.
The 36-hole event attracts the best U15’s from around the country as they compete in the hope of adding their name to the same trophy as Alex Fitzpatrick, Oliver Fisher and Justin Rose. In the first round, Josh shot 1 over par and was 4 shots back from the leader.
After lunch, the afternoon rounds began – unaware of what was needed, Josh eagled 13 and birdied 14 &15 to finish the afternoon round with a score of 67. By the time Josh reached the last, he had an inkling that he may be in contention and his clutch putt on the 18th green forced a play-off between himself and the leader. They both finished 1 under through the two rounds, which was 2 shots ahead of their next competitor.
The sudden death playoff started on the 10th hole and both players hit great tee shots under pressure. Josh played into the green first, hitting his approach to 25ft. His competitor replied with a wedge shot to 15ft above the pin. Josh knew he needed to go for the putt, but it slid by and his par putt to take the playoff to the next hole narrowly missed – he was pleased to secure a playoff from four shots back but was gutted he just missed out on the trophy.
Josh’s golf is trending in the right direction and he is looking forward to the remainder of the season with many tournaments to play. We wish Josh the best of luck going into his next big event North England U16 Open Amateur Strokeplay Championships on the 23rd– 25th of August. Keep up the great work Josh!
